Day 1: Hanoi arrival (D, GP)

Arriving at Noi Bai airport in Hanoi, you’ll be met and driven to your hotel. You’ll have time to relax before your afternoon trip. You’ll cruise around the Colonial Quarter in a cyclo to discover the city’s architectural mixture of French colonial style, social realism (mostly public buildings – designed or influenced by the USSR), pagodas and communal houses with many distinctly Chinese features, merchants’ residences, ‘tube’ dwellings, modern buildings and vernacular houses.

In the evening, you’ll have tickets for a performance of traditional Water Puppetry (an art form unique to northern Vietnam, and an interesting, light-hearted introduction to its rural culture) before a welcome dinner at a good restaurant in a restored colonial building. Your overnight stay will be in Hanoi.

The bustling Old Quarter, is a magnet for visitors – it’s noisy and hectic, but definitely a ‘must-see’ attraction. It is a maze of shopping streets and restaurants with a hotchpotch of architecture – traditional tube houses, religious buildings, artisans’ workshops and cottages, colonial houses and modern concrete edifices.

Day 2: Hanoi City tour with street food (street food, G)

After a leisurely breakfast, you’ll visit the Fine Art Museum which is consider the most interesting art collections in Vietnam.Your next stop will be Temple of Literature, the first university in Vietnam dating back to the 11th century and Hoa Lo Prison– better known by captured US pilots as the ‘Hanoi Hilton’

Later, we will be wandering a couple hours in the Old Quarter to explore many of the best street food. You can choose your own selection, for example from ‘pho’ (Hanoi’s famous beef noodle soup), ‘nom’ (green papaya salad with seasoned beef), ‘banh goi’ (minced pork and mushroom pillow-shaped pasty covers in breadcrumbs and deep-fried), ‘banh cuon’ (warm rice paper with pork and fried onion), or bun cha (fresh noodle with grilled pork and a sharp sauce), or Bun Cha (fresh noodle with grilled pork). Try 3-4 varieties as you wish.

The tour will finish, in true local style, at a Bia Hoi where you can enjoy some local draft beer. You’ll retuning back to your hotel and rest. Your accommodation will be in Hanoi.

Note that innumerable street food specialties will be available throughout the day; we just mention some of the famous dishes but you may find some other interesting on the way exploring. Your special dietary will be arranged.

Day 3: Hanoi/Ha Long (B, L, D, GP)

After breakfast, you’ll leave for Ha Long Bay, one of the most spectacular UNESCO World Heritage Areas and the world’s largest marine limestone ‘karst’ landscape. There you’ll board a private wooden junk that takes you through Bai Tu Long Bay area. You’ll then continue your cruise to the bay’s most deserted areas with opportunities to swim at quiet sandy beaches. The route is designed to avoid the busy areas and includes a very quiet location in the bay for your overnight stay.

For your three-day Ha Long excursion, you’ll board the L Amour Junk one of the best wooden boats on the Bay. These are modelled on the Chinese royal-court vessels of old with three barge sails, a wide transom and rectangular superstructure. Each boat has only one cabin, so you’re likely to be the King and the Queen on board.

The cabin is air-conditioned and has windows overlooking the bay. The floor area of the cabin is about 10 m2. The cabin is furnished with two twin beds or a double queen size bed. The interior panelling, floor and furniture are of hardwood. The cabin has a wardrobe, pillows, white cotton sheets, and an en-suite toilet and shower with a good selection of high-quality toiletries.  All meals, usually based on fresh seafood, will be provided on board. Kayaking is available and included in the price.

Day 4: Ha Long Bay (B, L, D, G on board)
After breakfast, you’ll continue your cruise to visit a fishing village where you’ll have an opportunity explore the village and hidden lagoons in a kayak. After a barbeque lunch on a wild sandy beach, your time will be your own to relax or continue exploring the bay by kayak. You’ll stay overnight in a very quiet location of the Bay.

Day 5: Ha Long/Hanoi/Hue (B, G on board, DP)

You’ll wake in fresh air of the bay, perhaps with a swim or relaxing on the sundeck. After breakfast, you’ll cruise to a private sandy beach for swimming (weather permitting) and enjoy cool drink on the beach. Alternatively, you’ll dock to visit one of the most famous caves in the Bay. You’ll return to the junk for a brunch while cruising back to dock around noon, whereupon you’ll leave for Noi Bai airport in Hanoi for an afternoon flight to Hue. On arrival, you’ll be picked up and transferred to your hotel where you spend the night.

Day 6: Hue (B, L, D, G)

Your morning will be taken up by a cruise along the Perfume River to the Thien Mu Pagoda, and then by road to the Royal Tombs of Emperor Minh Mang and, in the afternoon, the Imperial Citadel. The mausoleum and Citadel span the long reign of the Nguyen King’s imperial dynasty – the contrast is stark.

In the evening, you’ll sit down to din ner in the pleasant surroundings and comfortable atmosphere of a garden house. You’ll spend the night in Hue.

Each Royal mausoleum reflects the personality of the Emperor it commemorates. The most majestic is that of Emperor Minh Mang, a staunch follower of Confucianism with many wives, concubines and a small army of children. Planned by the Emperor and built shortly after his death in formal Chinese style, it’s opulent and exotic, and a good example of classic Sino-Vietnamese architecture.

In complete contrast to Emperor Ming Mang’s flamboyant creation, the tomb of Emperor Khai Dinh is an unprepossessing concrete construction on the side of a wide valley. Its interest lies in the uneasy combination of Vietnamese and European features, the use of fragments of ceramics and glass for decoration, and the striking views from the courtyard in front of the mausoleum.

The garden houses are a unique feature of Hue. The houses are traditional, privately owned, and set in attractive formal gardens. Some have connections with the old Royal Imperial Court. Hue traditional architecture has long had close associations with the natural environment. The garden houses reflect this association. Each is highly individual – house and garden, people and scenery, plants, clouds and water co-exist and blend with each other in a harmonious context. The narrow streets and abundant flora give the garden house area a country village feeling.

Alternative for Day 6: Cycling to get closer to Hue’s life (B, L, G)

In the morning, you’ll cycle over the Perfume River eastwards to the rural area, to a local market, a temple, and some cottage industries making the characteristic Vietnamese conical hats. Getting back to the town, your route will take you to the Ngoc Son garden house. The present owner, a famous Hue historian, will welcome you and provide an introduction to his own royal family history, and Hue’s traditions and customs.

Lunch will be at another garden house where the owner will prepare traditional Hue food. The menu will include an example of the heavily decorated Royal Food of the Imperial Court. From there, you’ll cycle up to the western part of Hue to visit An Hien garden house with its grand orchard, where the owner grows fruit trees brought from all over the country. You’ll then visit some of other cottage industries of Hue – you can choose whatever interests you: incense sticks, bronze carving or Hue’s cakes and confectionary. You’ll spend the night in Hue.

Day 7: Hue/Danang/Hoi An (B, L, G)

In the morning, your car will arrive to drive you to Danang. On the way, you’ll cross the high mountain pass of Hai Van. The views from the top are excellent – you should be able be able to see Lang Co beach and village, and the lagoon far below, with Danang spread out before you to the south.

Upon arriving in Danang, you’ll have a brief look at the remarkable Hindu statuary in the Cham Museum before leaving for the quaint port of Hoi An. Your time will be your own before a sunset cocktail cruise on the Thu Bon River. You’ll spend the night in Hoi An.

Hoi An town is a UNESCO World Heritage area. An ancient trading port, once the largest in Indochina, Hoi An was a meeting point for many cultures that left their mark in the different architectural features of its wooden buildings. The original traditional street pattern still exists, as does the quay that once welcomed ships from all over East Asia and beyond. Many remained there for months at a time, waiting for favourable trade winds to carry them home. There are plenty of good restaurants offering a variety of cuisines and price levels. The town is also a good place for shopping for silk. You can have your clothes tailor-made within a day or two at reasonable cost.

Hoi An town is three kilometres from Cua Dai Beach – part of what was once known as China Beach and used for rest and recreation by American GIs during the Vietnam War. The beach is composed of white sand fringed with palm trees and overlooks the South China Sea.

Day 8: Hoi An tour ½ day (B, L, G)

After breakfast, your guide will meet you to show you the Ancient Town and explain its considerable significance in the history of Vietnam, with the afternoon free at leisure. You’ll spend the night in Hoi An.

Day 9: Hoi An free (B)

The day will be free for strolling in the town, lazing on the beach, or whatever takes your fancy. You’ll spend the night in Hoi An.

Alternative for Day 9: Hoi An/My Son/Hoi An (B, G)

After breakfast, your guide will meet you at your hotel to take you to the World Heritage My Son Sanctuary, show you the remains of the remarkable brick towers, and explain their origins and purpose. When you return, the rest of the day will be free. You’ll spend the night in Hoi An.

Once, the My Son Sanctuary was the spiritual capital of the Cham Kingdom that dominated SE Asia for nearly a thousand years. Its remarkable brick towers were badly bombed, but are still impressive, as is its remote valley setting. It’s set in a quiet, richly forested area, bisected by a clear stream. However, the tree cover is not complete, and the valley acts as suntrap, so good sun protection is important.

Day 10: Hoi An/Danang/Qui Nhon (B, L on board, DP)
