About This Tour

Discover Vietnam through mountain trails, underground rivers and limestone bays on this twelve-day private adventure from Hanoi. Begin with an introduction to the capital and an overnight train to Lao Cai, then walk through the terraced valleys of the Sa Pa region with local guides. Two nights in pre-arranged village accommodation provide time to experience rural landscapes and meet participating hosts at a pace matched to your fitness.

Return to Hanoi before flying to Dong Hoi and staying near Phong Nha. The centrepiece is a proposed two-day Tu Lan Cave Encounter with Oxalis Adventure: forest trekking, authorised cave passages, swimming in underground rivers and one night at a guided jungle campsite. This is a moderate but physically demanding specialist expedition, subject to the operator’s age, experience and medical screening. After an optional Phong Nha cave visit, travel north and enjoy a night on a traditional Dragon’s Pearl or comparable Bai Tu Long Bay cruise.

Haivenu coordinates private land transfers, selected local guides, rail and flight tickets, hotels and the cruise. The cave expedition and boat operate under their own guides, capacities and safety rules. The personalised quotation will confirm exact routes, connection times, availability, inclusions and alternatives before booking.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

A flexible outline of your private Vietnam journey.

Day 1Arrive in Hanoi – Adventure Welcome

Meet the agreed guide or driver at Noi Bai International Airport and transfer privately to the confirmed Hanoi hotel. Check-in depends on your arrival time and the hotel's policy. If time allows, enjoy a short walk through the Old Quarter or along Hoan Kiem Lake. A cyclo ride, water-puppet show or welcome dinner is optional and provided only when the actual flight arrival and booked service permit. Review your trekking experience, swimming confidence, health screening requirements and preferred sleeping arrangements before the Sa Pa and Tu Lan sections. The evening is free to rest.

Overnight: Hanoi hotel – night 1 of 11

Meals: Arrival meals only when agreed in writing

Places: Noi Bai International Airport, Hanoi → Hanoi

Day 2Hanoi Ceramics and Local Crafts – Night Train to Lao Cai

Visit a participating ceramic workshop in Bat Trang with a local guide, focusing on the production process and a pre-booked hands-on activity when available. A hosted village lunch or a traditional Quan Ho folk-music performance can be arranged with willing providers, but these are not automatic inclusions and should not be combined with several distant villages in one day. Return to Hanoi with sufficient time for dinner, collecting luggage and boarding the booked overnight sleeper train to Lao Cai. The current railway timetable offers evening departures; the actual train and reserved berth must be confirmed for your date.

Overnight: Confirmed Hanoi–Lao Cai sleeper-train berth – night 2 of 11

Meals: Hotel breakfast and booked craft-day lunch; dinner and sleeper refreshments as quoted

Places: Hanoi → Hanoi Railway Station → Lao Cai overnight train

Day 3Arrive Lao Cai – Guided Sa Pa Valley Trek and Village Homestay

Meet the driver at Lao Cai railway station after the confirmed early arrival and continue by road to the Sa Pa region for a booked breakfast or rest stop. Join a local guide for a valley walk suited to the group, potentially along approved trails near Thanh Kim, Thanh Phu, Nam Cum or another viable community route. Walking can involve steep paths, uneven stones and seasonal mud, and an all-day trek after the sleeper train is not compulsory. Meet willing Tay or Red Dao hosts only with prior agreement and respect their privacy. Finish at a confirmed village homestay or lodge, with bedding, bathroom and dinner arrangements explained before booking.

Overnight: Sa Pa village homestay or lodge – night 3 of 11

Meals: Breakfast after train arrival, booked trekking lunch and hosted dinner as included

Places: Lao Cai Railway Station → Sa Pa / Thanh Phu area village accommodation

Day 4Sa Pa – Nam Cang and Red Dao Village Trails

Explore a second day of Sa Pa's quieter valleys with an English-speaking or bilingual local guide. Depending on weather, guest fitness and road support, walk through sections around Nam Nhiu, Nam Than, Nam Cang or another permitted village trail, with lunch at a pre-arranged participating host. A longer multi-hour trek is offered only to suitable guests, while shorter trails and vehicle support can be arranged. Cultural encounters and handicraft demonstrations require the residents' consent; photographs and entry into homes are never assumed. Check in to the second confirmed community homestay or lodge and enjoy dinner according to the booked meal plan.

Overnight: Sa Pa village homestay or lodge – night 4 of 11

Meals: Host breakfast and arranged trekking lunch and dinner

Places: Sa Pa rural village accommodation → Sa Pa / Nam Cang area village accommodation

Day 5Sa Pa Morning Walk – Return to Hanoi by Road

After breakfast, choose a shorter guided walk near the confirmed homestay or village, rather than another compulsory five- or six-hour trek. Have an early lunch if arranged, meet the pre-booked driver and return to Hanoi by private road vehicle, allowing a substantial afternoon or evening journey and planned breaks. The return train has been replaced in this proposed itinerary to avoid relying on a predawn arrival followed by an early Hanoi-to-Dong Hoi flight tomorrow. Check into the booked Hanoi hotel for a full overnight stay, and reconfirm the airline schedule, baggage allowance and airport pickup for the following morning.

Overnight: Hanoi hotel – night 5 of 11

Meals: Homestay breakfast and route lunch if included; dinner as quoted

Places: Sa Pa / village accommodation → Hanoi

Day 6Fly Hanoi to Dong Hoi – Settle into Phong Nha

Transfer to Noi Bai Airport for the booked Hanoi-to-Dong Hoi domestic flight. Published flight schedules can be limited, so the actual operating service, baggage and day-of-week availability must be confirmed before accepting a booking. Meet the driver at Dong Hoi Airport and transfer to the agreed Phong Nha hotel or lodge. Keep the afternoon flexible to rest, check essential cave equipment and attend any operator-requested briefing for the specialist Tu Lan trip. Haivenu must reconfirm Oxalis's departure date, fitness screening and pickup point before finalising this tour; if the two-day expedition has no place, agree on another route before booking.

Overnight: Phong Nha hotel or lodge – night 6 of 11

Meals: Hanoi hotel breakfast and Phong Nha meals only as listed in the accepted plan

Places: Hanoi via Noi Bai Airport → Phong Nha / Son River area

Day 7Tu Lan Cave Encounter – Hung Ton and To Mo Jungle Camp

Depart early from the confirmed Phong Nha pickup for Oxalis Adventure's two-day Tu Lan Cave Encounter, with transfer to its Tan Hoa operating office. After mandatory safety and medical checks, equipment fitting and briefing, follow the operator's approved route across fields and river crossings to Hung Ton Cave and the To Mo Valley. Sections may involve steep limestone, a secured cave ladder, water passages and guided swimming with life jackets, depending on the actual itinerary. The specialist safety team, not Haivenu's general guide, controls participation and cave access. Enjoy the expedition's scheduled meals and spend the night in the operator's designated jungle camp under the confirmed package.

Overnight: Oxalis-authorised Tu Lan jungle campsite – night 7 of 11

Meals: Meals and drinking water provided only according to the booked Oxalis expedition

Places: Phong Nha → Tu Lan / To Mo campsite near Tan Hoa

Day 8Tu Lan Caves – Guided Exit and Return to Phong Nha

Continue with the Oxalis cave team after breakfast to explore the approved Tu Lan and Kim cave passages, or their authorised equivalents depending on water, weather and the selected tour. Some sections involve underground swimming, challenging footing, rope-protected steps and river crossings; completion is conditional on the operator's safety assessment, and nobody should enter caves independently. Return to the Tan Hoa office for the scheduled shower and equipment return before an operator transfer to Phong Nha, normally in the early evening. A separate overnight stay in a confirmed Phong Nha hotel is arranged for this itinerary; any optional post-expedition homestay benefit is not assumed or duplicated.

Overnight: Phong Nha hotel or lodge – night 8 of 11

Meals: Oxalis breakfast and lunch; evening meal only if named in the accepted quote

Places: Tu Lan campsite / Tan Hoa → Phong Nha

Day 9Phong Nha Cave – Evening Sleeper Train from Dong Hoi

Use the morning for a licensed boat excursion to Phong Nha Cave when water levels, site opening and the group's recovery after Tu Lan permit. The cave is a separate tourist attraction from the Tu Lan system, and the visit may be shortened in favour of rest before the railway journey. After an agreed lunch, drive to Dong Hoi railway station with a reasonable time buffer for luggage and check-in. Board the pre-booked evening sleeper train to Hanoi; published services can arrive early the next morning, but exact train, berth and schedule are date dependent. The following day's cruise connection must be assessed for missed-train or delay risk before both services are purchased.

Overnight: Confirmed Dong Hoi–Hanoi sleeper-train berth – night 9 of 11

Meals: Hotel breakfast and booked cave-day lunch; dinner on train only if specified

Places: Phong Nha → Dong Hoi → Hanoi sleeper train

Day 10Early Hanoi Arrival – Dragon's Pearl Cruise on Bai Tu Long Bay

Meet the pre-booked driver on arrival at Hanoi Railway Station and take a rest and breakfast stop as planned. Transfer onward by road to Indochina Junk's confirmed Ha Long cruise harbour, allowing sufficient time for the late-morning or midday check-in. This connection is feasible only when the actual train arrives with enough buffer for the road trip; if it cannot be secured safely, the operator must revise the sequence or add an agreed night before the sale. Board the proposed Dragon's Pearl traditional wooden junk for a two-day Bai Tu Long Bay sailing, with cabin, licensed cruise route, scheduled meals and weather-permitting kayaking or cave visits specified in the operator confirmation. It is not a private ship charter unless separately booked.

Overnight: Dragon's Pearl or confirmed licensed Bai Tu Long cruise cabin – night 10 of 11

Meals: Booked breakfast stop, cruise lunch and dinner according to accepted services

Places: Hanoi Railway Station → Bai Tu Long Bay cruise anchorage

Day 11Bai Tu Long Bay – Disembark and Return to Hanoi

Enjoy the cruise's published morning route and breakfast, with an optional scheduled bamboo-boat, floating-village or cave activity only if the chosen operator package and maritime conditions allow. Swim or kayak solely where authorised and with suitable safety equipment. After the booked brunch or lunch, disembark at the confirmed harbour and meet the road transfer to Hanoi. The group returns to its confirmed city hotel for a final overnight and a free evening. Special dining, an extra cultural show or a room upgrade can be requested but is not automatically included.

Overnight: Hanoi hotel – night 11 of 11

Meals: Cruise breakfast and brunch or lunch according to the package; evening dining as quoted

Places: Bai Tu Long Bay cruise anchorage → Hanoi

Day 12Depart Hanoi – Private Airport Transfer

Enjoy hotel breakfast if included and check out according to the hotel's schedule. Meet the agreed driver for the transfer to Noi Bai International Airport, allowing enough time for traffic, international check-in and luggage procedures. Optional sightseeing or hotel late checkout is available only when separately booked and compatible with the flight. The twelve-day Vietnam hiking, specialist caving and Bai Tu Long Bay cruise adventure ends at the agreed departure point after eleven nights; there is no Ho Chi Minh City section in this route.

Overnight: Tour ends; no twelfth overnight

Meals: Hotel breakfast if included in room rate; further meals independently unless quoted

Places: Hanoi → Noi Bai International Airport (HAN)

Cancellation & Changes

The written confirmed quote will identify refund and change deadlines for the Oxalis specialist departure, domestic airline, overnight train berths, Bai Tu Long cruise and accommodations. The cave operator's approval and supplier-specific non-refundable terms apply to confirmed services.

Refund Policy

Refund eligibility follows the accepted private-tour agreement and each actual airline, rail, hotel, Oxalis and cruise supplier's cancellation rules. No standard full refund or unlimited free rescheduling is promised, particularly for limited-capacity cave departures.

Weather Policy

Heavy rain or flood conditions can prevent Tu Lan cave expeditions and Sa Pa trekking; Oxalis has final authority over specialist cave safety and can close the route. Maritime authorities control Bai Tu Long departures, while train or flight disruption may invalidate onward connections. Safer itinerary substitutions and any related charges follow the accepted supplier terms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does the twelve-day Vietnam adventure start and end?

The itinerary starts at Noi Bai Airport in Hanoi and finishes in Hanoi after the Bai Tu Long Bay cruise. It does not travel to Ho Chi Minh City; international flights are outside the base package unless agreed.

Is this really a soft adventure tour?

The Hanoi and bay sections are flexible, but the proposed Sa Pa hikes and Oxalis Tu Lan Cave Encounter are physically demanding. The tour is best described as Moderate trekking and specialist caving, not an easy or wholly soft adventure.

How are the eleven nights allocated?

Three nights are in Hanoi hotels, two on separate sleeper trains, two in Sa Pa village accommodations, two in Phong Nha hotels, one at an authorised Oxalis jungle campsite and one in a Bai Tu Long Bay cruise cabin.

How many guests can travel together?

This proposal is designed for private land groups of two to ten. Oxalis currently limits its shared Tu Lan Cave Encounter departures to ten participants and may combine guests with other bookings. Booking the cave group privately requires the operator's separate acceptance and pricing.

Is the Tu Lan Cave Encounter private?

No. The standard Oxalis Tu Lan Cave Encounter is a guided join-in expedition even when Haivenu arranges the rest of the journey privately. A specially approved private departure must be requested and confirmed separately.

Who is eligible to join the Tu Lan cave expedition?

Oxalis currently lists ages sixteen to seventy for Tu Lan Cave Encounter and imposes physical fitness, trekking-experience and health screening requirements. Every person must meet those criteria and accept the safety briefing; Haivenu cannot waive them.

How strenuous is the Tu Lan Cave Encounter?

Oxalis currently describes about 15.5 kilometres of trekking, up to 3.2 kilometres of caving, 440 metres of ascent, roughly one kilometre of underground swimming and a secured cave ladder on its two-day encounter route. Actual operator instructions and safety conditions control the activity.

Do I need to know how to swim?

You must be comfortable with water passages and obey the operator's instructions while wearing the supplied life jacket. Discuss swimming ability with Oxalis before booking, as alternative routes or assistance are not guaranteed for every departure.

Are the Sa Pa village treks suitable for beginners?

A suitable local guide can help choose shorter or longer rural paths, but some sections can be steep, muddy and tiring. Tell Haivenu about your recent walking experience and mobility so the route can be assessed before confirmation.

Why is the return trip from Sa Pa to Hanoi by road?

The revised Day 5 uses a private road return followed by a Hanoi hotel night, reducing the risk of arriving by night train shortly before an early flight to Dong Hoi. This replaces the original Lao Cai-to-Hanoi sleeper leg in the proposed quotation.

Can we take a sleeper train from Dong Hoi and board the Bai Tu Long cruise the next day?

It can work only if the booked train reaches Hanoi early and there is sufficient margin for the private drive, rest stops and the cruise check-in. Rail delays may cause a missed sailing, so the operator must verify the dates and offer an alternative sequence if the timing is unsafe.

What is included in the two-day Bai Tu Long Bay cruise?

The sample programme proposes a booked cabin on Dragon's Pearl, a traditional licensed Indochina Junk vessel. The accepted cruise ticket defines the actual anchorage, meals, cave or village visits, kayaking and other activities. Exclusive charter is not included by default.

What is the best season for this combination?

The Tu Lan Cave Encounter operator currently schedules departures from mid-November to mid-September. Sa Pa can be cold or wet in winter, and Bai Tu Long sailing depends on monsoon, storm and harbour safety decisions. Check all three regions for your exact dates.

Are cave safety equipment, food and medical insurance included?

The confirmed Oxalis package supplies its required cave equipment, camp meals and a stated limited expedition insurance benefit. Comprehensive personal travel insurance and any separately booked hotels or excursions must be checked against the Haivenu proposal.

How can I request a confirmed private adventure quote?

Provide your travel dates, group size, ages, fitness and trekking history, swimming confidence, health or dietary requirements and accommodation preferences. Haivenu will verify the Oxalis departure, Dong Hoi flight, sleeper trains, Bai Tu Long cruise, all inclusions, prices and cancellation conditions before booking.
