Ha Long Bay or Lan Ha Bay—which cruise should you book? Choose Ha Long Bay if famous cave stops and classic cruise routes matter most. Consider Lan Ha Bay for Cat Ba scenery, island coves and an itinerary that may feel quieter. Neither bay guarantees fewer crowds, kayaking or a particular sight: the licensed vessel, route and departure date decide what you can actually do.
Since April 2026, authorised overnight routes can connect the two bays. Before choosing by a brochure label, find out whether your main cruise ship travels between them or whether a separate day boat visits Lan Ha.
Ha Long vs Lan Ha Bay: Quick Cruise Comparison
| Booking question | Ha Long Bay | Lan Ha Bay |
|---|---|---|
| Location | Quang Ninh, near Ha Long City | Hai Phong, around Cat Ba Archipelago |
| Typical draw | Famous limestone scenery and established cave or viewpoint itineraries | Cat Ba-side scenery, coves, island and village visits |
| Crowds | Popular stops can be busy when several cruise groups arrive | Some routes may feel quieter; well-known sites can also be busy |
| Boarding pier | Often Tuan Chau or Ha Long International Passenger Port | Depends on the ship: Cat Ba-side piers or mainland embarkation may apply |
| Water activities | Only at approved sites and when permitted | Kayaking restrictions require explicit operator confirmation |
| Essential question | Which named stops and approved cruise route are included? | Does the main vessel enter Lan Ha, or is the visit by day boat? |
Both belong to the spectacular limestone seascape recognised as Ha Long Bay–Cat Ba Archipelago: UNESCO approved extending the World Heritage property to the Cat Ba Archipelago in 2023. Lan Ha is not a separate, unrecognised alternative.
What Changed for Ha Long–Lan Ha Cruises in April 2026?
Quang Ninh and Hai Phong signed an inter-provincial cruise-management agreement on 26 March 2026, effective 1 April 2026. It provides for four licensed connecting routes—Ha Long routes 3, 4, 5 and 6 linked to Lan Ha. The provincial announcement specifies these connecting routes as overnight cruise itineraries, not ordinary day-sightseeing tours. The first reported linked sailings operated on 20 April 2026. Read Quang Ninh’s official announcement.
Two of the reported launch vessels were Au Co 1 and Ambassador Signature. Their approval does not establish that a different cruise ship may use the same connecting route. Ask your operator for the confirmed ship and route. A licensed local day-boat excursion within the Cat Ba area is a different service from the four new overnight inter-bay routes.
Is Kayaking Available in Lan Ha Bay in 2026?
Do not book on that assumption. An Indochina Sails notice states that kayaking on its Lan Ha routes remains suspended from 1 February 2026 until further notice, citing Cat Hai Notification 483/TB-UBND. Amanda–Le Journey also reported suspending kayaking and offering alternative activities.
These notices establish a material booking risk, but they are not proof that every operator or every water area has identical current permissions. No authoritative, area-wide lifting notice was confirmed in this review on 6 November 2026. Ask the named cruise operator, in writing, whether kayaking is legally available on your specific sailing and stop, what activity replaces it if not, and whether the change affects the quoted price. Check swimming, tender and bamboo-boat activities in the same way.
A photograph of kayaking in an older itinerary is not a guarantee of permission now. A licensed kayaking stop elsewhere in Ha Long Bay does not automatically authorise kayaking in Lan Ha.
Day Trip, One Night or Two Nights?
Day cruise: Best for a short visit to specific approved scenery or cave stops. Compare the actual time on the water and boarding pier, not just the words “full day”. Cat Ba-based day trips and mainland cruises involve different transfer arrangements.
Two days, one night: A useful choice if you want one sunset and overnight cabin while keeping a longer Vietnam itinerary moving. Boarding and disembarkation use part of each day, so it is not two full sightseeing days.
Three days, two nights: Often better for travellers interested in a longer operator excursion or a Cat Ba/Viet Hai component. The extra excursion may require transferring to a smaller day boat rather than remaining on the overnight vessel. Confirm accessibility, weather alternatives and how much free time remains.
Real Example: Haivenu’s Three-Day Emperor Cruises Programme
Haivenu’s 3-Day Emperor Cruises Ha Long & Lan Ha Bay is a published sample itinerary, not a confirmed departure or completed guest trip. Its planned arrangements explain why the details matter:
| Day | What the published programme proposes | What requires confirmation |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Embark Emperor Cruises Legacy Halong at Tuan Chau; Me Cung Cave and Tung Sau area | Exact lounge, sailing time, cave access and any authorised water activities |
| 2 | Take an operator-arranged day boat or speedboat towards Viet Hai and the Lan Ha area; return to the main cruise ship | Whether the day-boat excursion runs, village access and permitted alternatives |
| 3 | Proposed Luon Cave bamboo-boat visit, brunch and disembarkation at Tuan Chau | Harbour and weather permissions, final return time and onward transport |
The important distinction is that the sample programme offers two nights aboard the main ship in Ha Long and a separate Lan Ha/Viet Hai day-boat excursion. That does not, by itself, show the main vessel operating one of the newly licensed overnight connecting routes. Specific stops may be replaced for safety or operational reasons.
This is a shared scheduled cruise, not a private charter. The published package does not presume that Hanoi–Tuan Chau road transfers, premium upgrades or an exclusive guide are included. Check the final cabin, meal plan and any other inclusions in the written quote.
When Is the Weather Most Suitable?
Vietnam Tourism’s climate guide suggests April–June and September–November as generally favourable Ha Long sailing windows. December–March can be cool or misty; summer brings greater storm risk. Both bays share regional marine weather hazards. Port authorities may restrict sailing at short notice, so read the operator’s cancellation and itinerary-change conditions before paying.
Five Checks Before Choosing Your Cruise
- Ship and route: What is the vessel’s name, licensed itinerary and exact Ha Long/Lan Ha stops?
- Boat changes: Does the main ship cross both bays, or will you use a separate day boat?
- Boarding and transfers: Which pier, check-in time and Hanoi or Cat Ba transport are included?
- Activities and safety: Are kayaking, swimming, cave access and bamboo boats authorised on your dates? What alternatives apply?
- Written quote: Which cabin, meals, entrance tickets, guide services, weather terms and cancellation rules are included?
Choose Ha Long for the famous cave-oriented routes, Lan Ha for a Cat Ba-side focus, or an explicitly authorised combined route when you want both. Choose the actual programme over the marketing label.
Use Haivenu’s Emperor Cruises example as a starting point, or explore tailor-made Vietnam journeys. Share your travel dates, guest count, preferred number of nights, cabin requirements and must-do activities so that Haivenu can verify the operator, route, current permissions and quotation before you book.
