How much time should you allow between destinations in Vietnam? Use a hotel-to-hotel transfer budget, not only the journey time shown for a plane, train or car. A short flight still needs airport travel, check-in, baggage collection and a transfer to the next hotel. A drive advertised as two hours may take longer once you collect travellers, stop for breaks or reach a different hotel.
When building an itinerary, treat long transfers as part of the day’s programme. The question is not only “How long is the journey?” but “What time—and energy—will remain for sightseeing?”
Vietnam Travel Times: Six Useful Planning Ranges
These are indicative hotel-to-hotel or pickup-to-drop-off planning allowances for common routes, not live traffic measurements or promises. Fast expressway timings published elsewhere may be shorter. Exact travel depends on the departure point, vehicle, stops and conditions.
| Journey | Useful planning allowance | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Hanoi → Ninh Binh / Tam Coc | Allow roughly 2–3 hours by road | A clear expressway run can be faster; a day trip also needs the same journey back |
| Hanoi → Tuan Chau cruise pier | Allow around 2.5–3.5 hours by road | Confirm the actual cruise terminal, check-in cut-off and whether your transfer is shared |
| Hanoi → Sa Pa | Roughly 5.5–7 hours by road | The overnight train stops at Lao Cai, followed by another road transfer to Sa Pa |
| Hue → Hoi An | About 2.5–3 hours direct via the tunnel; 3.5–5 hours or more via Hai Van Pass with stops | A scenic transfer with sightseeing can occupy much of the day |
| Hoi An → Da Nang Airport | Plan roughly 45–75 minutes by car | Airport check-in and the flight are additional, not included |
| Ho Chi Minh City → central Can Tho | Roughly 3–4 hours by private road transfer; shared bus trips may need 4–5 hours | City traffic, vehicle stops and the final drop-off change the result |
These allowances deliberately differ from the fastest advertised driving minutes. For example, 2026 route guides report shorter clear-road journeys for Hanoi departures, while the Hue–Hoi An journey changes substantially depending on the tunnel, mountain pass and stops. Use published figures as a starting point, then obtain a date-specific estimate for your exact hotels.
Why a 90-Minute Flight May Use Most of a Day
Consider this illustrative Hoi An hotel → Ho Chi Minh City hotel journey via Da Nang Airport. The numbers show how to construct a planning budget; they are not a real flight schedule or a guaranteed transfer.
| Step | Illustrative allowance |
|---|---|
| Hoi An hotel → Da Nang Airport | 50 minutes |
| Time at the airport before departure | 1 hour 45 minutes |
| Domestic flight | 1 hour 30 minutes |
| Disembark, collect baggage and exit | 45 minutes |
| Ho Chi Minh City airport → hotel | 1 hour |
| Total | 5 hours 50 minutes |
Vietnam Airlines recommends arriving 1.5–2 hours before a domestic flight. Separately, its airport-counter guidance says domestic counters normally open two hours and close 40 minutes before departure. The 40-minute closure is a deadline, not a recommended arrival time. Always check the operating airline and your ticket.
The practical lesson: keep a flight-arrival afternoon light, especially when travelling with children or luggage. A local dinner may fit; a fixed-time excursion immediately after arrival could be risky.
Hanoi to Sa Pa: Remember the Final Leg from Lao Cai
In its 12 October 2026 timetable notice, Vietnam Railways listed the following Hanoi → Lao Cai overnight trains:
| Train | Hanoi departure | Lao Cai arrival next morning |
|---|---|---|
| SP15 | 21:45 | 05:20 |
| SP3 | 22:00 | 05:50 |
| SP7 | 22:40 | 06:27 |
These are published schedule times as of that notice, not confirmation that a specific service or sleeper berth is available on your date. Lao Cai station is not in Sa Pa: allow a further road journey, often around an hour or more depending on the destination. You will also need time to meet the driver, have breakfast and recover from overnight travel.
An early train arrival does not always justify a demanding full-day trek. Build the first day around your group’s actual fitness, sleep and the booked homestay location.
How Real Haivenu Tours Use Travel Days
These are published sample programmes, not completed guest trips or transport-time guarantees. Their daily allocations show why a 14-day itinerary does not mean 14 full sightseeing days.
Vietnam Sonata: Several different kinds of transfer day
The 14-Day Vietnam Sonata itinerary uses day 4 for the transfer and overnight bay cruise, and day 5 for the cruise morning and return to Hanoi. Day 6 includes the flight to Hue; day 8 moves overland to Hoi An; day 10 is the flight from Da Nang to Ho Chi Minh City. Days 12–13 involve substantial Mekong Delta road travel.
These days can still include selected activities, but a flight, cruise disembarkation or long road sector uses part of the available time. Adding more stops without removing something else would make the programme more rushed.
Homestay journey: a recovery day after demanding travel
Haivenu’s 14-Day Vietnam Homestay Tour proposes a shared overnight train on day 2 followed by guided mountain walks on days 3–5. Day 5 combines approximately 4.5 hours of trekking with road travel and a shared limousine back to Hanoi. Day 6 is deliberately free for recovery.
That free day is a pacing decision, not wasted holiday time. An easier trek or additional rest may be more suitable for travellers with young children or limited mobility.
Five Checks Before Finalising Your Route
- Count the whole transfer: hotel pickup, vehicle time, airport or station procedures, baggage, stops and arrival at the next accommodation.
- Protect fixed departures: verify the boarding pier, train station and flight check-in requirements before scheduling other activities.
- Separate transport from sightseeing: a scenic Hue–Hoi An transfer can become a half-day excursion, while a cruise return or flight may leave little time for another tour.
- Respect rest and seasonal conditions: leave flexibility after overnight trains, long treks and journeys affected by mountain roads or rough weather.
- Plan international connections carefully: do not assume an independently ticketed domestic flight will connect safely to an international departure. Check baggage, ticket conditions and suitable buffers; an extra night can reduce risk.
Choose a Route with Time to Enjoy Vietnam
A strong itinerary leaves enough time at each stop, not just enough time to reach it. When comparing two routes, look at the number of hotel changes, transfer-heavy days and genuinely free afternoons.
