Con Dao combines quiet beaches, protected forests and reefs with some of Vietnam’s most significant wartime memorial sites. For a first visit, three nights allow history, beach time and a weather-dependent nature excursion. With only two nights, choose a focused plan instead of trying to visit every island.
Since July 2025, Con Dao has been the Con Dao Special Zone of Ho Chi Minh City. Older guides still call it part of Ba Ria–Vung Tau Province, its former administration. The local tourism authority’s 2026 overview confirms the change; the islands themselves have not moved.
Con Dao travel guide: essential planning decisions
| Question | Planning answer |
|---|---|
| What makes Con Dao different? | Prison and memorial history alongside beaches, national-park forest and marine conservation |
| Where to stay? | Con Son town for restaurants and heritage access; a coastal resort for quiet and beach time |
| How long? | 2 nights for a short break; 3–4 nights for history plus nature with a weather buffer |
| Best period for marine trips? | Often March–September; check wind, sea conditions and operator permissions |
| Sea turtle season? | Generally May–September, with annual variation; sightings and park programmes are never guaranteed |
| Getting there? | Fly to Con Dao Airport (VCS), or use an operating ferry route confirmed for your exact date |
| 2026 administrative address? | Con Dao Special Zone, Ho Chi Minh City; formerly part of Ba Ria–Vung Tau Province |
Con Dao or Con Son: where should you base yourself?
Con Dao is the archipelago; Con Son is the main inhabited island, home to the airport, town, prison sites and most hotels. Smaller protected islands are not automatically accessible or included in a trip sold as “Con Dao”.
| Base | Good for | Check before booking |
|---|---|---|
| Con Son town | Restaurants, heritage sites, local life, simpler transfers | Distance to an actual swimmable beach and noise at the chosen property |
| An Hai / nearby coast | Combination of beach atmosphere and easier town access | Beach conditions, tide, water safety and walking distance |
| Dat Doc or secluded resort setting | Privacy, resort-led relaxation and fewer daily transfers | Distance to town, transfer inclusions, dining options and whether activities require a car |
Choose your base by purpose: Con Son town generally suits a history and food-focused trip; a resort away from town suits a slower beach retreat. Check transfers, dining and the actual swimming beach before booking.
Con Dao beaches and National Park: what to see
Dam Trau, Dat Doc and the island’s varied shoreline
Dam Trau near the airport is a familiar sandy beach; Dat Doc is associated with resort-led coastal stays. Other bays may require a walk or managed access. Do not assume a photographic beach is swimmable: ask staff about surf, currents, restrictions and local weather.
Forest walks, coral reefs and protected islets
Con Dao National Park protects forests, coral reefs, seagrass and marine wildlife. Its 2025 IUCN Green List recognition reflects conservation management, not UNESCO World Heritage inscription. See the government biodiversity authority. A September 2026 ecotourism decision also emphasises conservation.
National-park trails and boat excursions may require a guide, permission or separate fees. Use authorised marine operators; do not stand on reefs, take wildlife or enter closed areas. Vietnam Tourism documents the diving opportunities, but daily conditions determine access.
Sea turtles: conservation before photographs
Green turtles nest seasonally on protected beaches, often May–September, with annual variation. Ranger-led visits and hatchling programmes require park authorisation and never guarantee sightings. No flashes, independent approaches or handling hatchlings. Conservation comes before photos. See Vietnam Tourism’s season guide and Haivenu’s ethical wildlife travel checklist.
Con Dao’s prison history: visit with care
The Con Dao prison complex documents imprisonment and suffering through colonial and wartime periods. Historical buildings and exhibits are places of education and remembrance, not dramatic photo sets. Some displays may distress children; ask about a suitable museum-led introduction.
Hang Duong Cemetery commemorates prisoners and others who died on the islands. Dress respectfully, keep voices low and follow rules for ceremonies and photographs. The Con Dao tourism authority explains the memorial history. Confirm visiting arrangements before planning any formal tribute.
Best time to visit Con Dao: the sea matters as much as the rain
Dry weather does not always mean calm sea. Vietnam Tourism highlights March–September for many marine activities; a local diving operator warns that November–February northeast winds can bring high seas and suspended boats. Rain and storms remain possible even in better marine months.
| Period | Often suits | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| March–May | Snorkelling, boat trips, beach stays and island exploration | Busy periods and warm weather; marine conditions still vary |
| June–September | Protected turtle-season interests and many marine activities | Rain, storms and no certainty of nesting encounters |
| October–February | Heritage visits, town walks and quieter land-based stays | Northeast wind and rough seas can disrupt ferries, diving and offshore excursions |
How to reach Con Dao in 2026: flights versus ferries
By air: usually the simpler way for short trips
Con Dao Airport (VCS) is on Con Son. Flying from Ho Chi Minh City (SGN) takes approximately 45 minutes in the air. Vietnam Airlines/VASCO have served the route, and Vietjet published Hanoi and SGN routes in 2025. Airline services have changed, so verify November 2026 flight availability directly at airline checkout, not from a past announcement.
By sea: check the current operator, port and season
Tran De near Soc Trang is an important departure for the Con Dao ferry, normally taking roughly 2–3 hours at sea when operating. Older guides list Vung Tau and Ho Chi Minh City ferries, but some routes are suspended or seasonal. The operator’s November 2026 timetable includes Tran De, not proof that every advertised route runs daily. Verify your departure port and ship before booking accommodation.
Check the exact terminal, Ben Dam arrival, transport to Con Son town, luggage rules, weather cancellations and written rebooking/refund terms. Ferries can be cancelled in rough seas. For seasickness concerns or tight international connections, a confirmed flight may be easier; never rely on old fare tables.
A realistic three- or four-day Con Dao itinerary
Three days / two nights: a short introduction
Day 1: arrive and settle into Con Son or your resort. Day 2: visit prison relics and Hang Duong Cemetery respectfully, with a museum or town meal. Day 3: enjoy a nearby beach before departure. This short plan leaves little flexibility for a boat-dependent wildlife excursion.
Four days / three nights: nature plus heritage with some flexibility
Day 1: arrive and rest. Day 2: historical sites and town. Day 3: a permitted park walk, snorkelling or ranger-supervised activity if conditions allow; otherwise choose a land-based alternative. Day 4: depart with transport confirmed in advance. Wildlife and sailing cannot be promised.
These are sample itineraries, not Haivenu tour inclusions or confirmed transport schedules. Ask about stairs, uneven trails, piers and beach accessibility when required.
Con Dao or Phu Quoc: which island holiday fits?
Con Dao suits quieter nature, historical context and a smaller resort selection; Phu Quoc generally provides a larger entertainment and hotel scene. Con Dao has more constrained transport and is not guaranteed to be deserted. Compare both in the best beaches in Vietnam guide.
Plan a private Con Dao island stay
Haivenu publishes a four-day Six Senses Con Dao retreat and a 15-day culture-and-nature route reaching Con Dao. These are options to compare, not promises of park permits, flights, turtle outings or guide services. Verify the written itinerary.

Frequently asked questions about Con Dao
How many days do you need on Con Dao?
Three to four days work well for a first visit with both historical sites and beach time. Two nights are possible but leave little room for a sea-dependent activity or transport delay.
When is Con Dao’s best beach and diving season?
March–September often offers better marine conditions than the northeast-monsoon months. Daily wind and sea safety override seasonal averages; check the island operator before a boat trip.
Can I see sea turtles on Con Dao?
Con Dao is an important nesting habitat, with activity generally around May–September. Visits require appropriate national-park authorisation and protection rules; nesting or a hatchling release is never guaranteed.
Is Con Dao part of UNESCO World Heritage?
Do not confuse conservation labels: Con Dao National Park is on the IUCN Green List, while the prison complex is an important Vietnamese heritage site. These designations are not the same as UNESCO World Heritage inscription.
Is it better to fly or take a ferry to Con Dao?
A flight is generally easier for a short visit from Ho Chi Minh City. Ferries can suit travellers with a suitable mainland departure, but the route, port, seats, weather and changes to the operating schedule must be verified for the exact date.
